Field Notes From the Chapters

London, May 1795. Composer Joseph Haydn premieres his Symphony No. 102 in B-flat major to thunderous applause. Then … suddenly … a massive chandelier crashes to the floor. It narrowly misses the assembled throng surging forward from their seats to congratulate Haydn. No casualties! Henceforth it was known as the Miracle Symphony.

Near Parkville, Missouri, September 1856. The Arabia, a steamboat, hits a submerged sycamore branch and sinks in the Mississippi River, along with tons of merchandise bound for Western settlements. Buried under mud and silt by shifting currents, it isn’t found again until 1987, when the wreckage turns up in a cornfield. Miraculously, the only casualty was a mule.

AAII, 2024. If you’re in the mood for a modern-day miracle, consider the post-pandemic rebirth of our chapters. Despite challenges and impediments—social distancing, shuttered venues, rattled attendees—chapters sprang back like green shoots after a forest fire. In 2023, AAII chapters hosted 126 in-person, online and hybrid meetings, not counting special interest group (SIG) meetings. Through August 2024, chapters have hosted 83 events, with a bustling autumn season still ahead. All AAII members could have attended any of them, mostly without charge.

You might say it wasn’t a miracle, just a marvel attributable to the talent, commitment and hard work of the many volunteer chapter leaders in our nationwide chapter network.
