Remember when “playing it safe” meant a savings account, a U.S. Treasury bond or a certificate of deposit (CD) along with a broad market index fund? Today’s graduates are entering a very different landscape—one shaped by TikTok traders, YouTube “finfluencers,” artificial intelligence (AI) models and cryptocurrency hype promising fast gains.
For many 20-somethings, building wealth can include AI-powered stock picks and alternative assets such as gold and silver or cryptocurrency. Some even attempt to build income through a personal brand.
The question is now: Will new graduates follow time-tested strategies ... or chase a faster, untraditional path?
This month, I asked the AAII Community three questions for those guiding new investors.
The takeaway: The best guidance in 2026 isn’t a lecture, it’s a conversation.
Ask your graduate what financial success means to them. Share what you’ve learned, but listen just as closely. This generation is navigating side hustles, digital assets and less financial transparency, often driven by a real desire for independence and funding exploration.
Your experience provides the foundation; their mindset brings adaptation. Together, that’s where lasting financial wisdom begins.
Start the conversation, reflect on generational perspectives and consider joining the Beginner Investor Community to share insights within the AAII Community.
