A New Look for AAII.com, Plus Remembering William O'Neil

by Charles Rotblut | June 08, 2023

Yesterday, we launched a redesigned version of the AAII website. In making the change, we set out to do more than just apply a fresh coat of paint. We wanted to make the site a more engaging, accessible and seamless experience for all AAII members. In doing so, we listened to and incorporated the thoughts and suggestions from AAII members.

You can watch a webinar that shows you how to take full advantage of the redesigned website, but I want to highlight some of the changes here.

One of the things you may notice right off the bat is a new navigation menu at the top of every page. The navigation is now more intuitive to help you find what you need quickly and easily.

Similarly, we’ve made the My AAII tools more accessible. These tools are a member benefit I encourage you to take advantage of.

My Library allows you to save AAII Journal articles to your personal library (which includes useful folders if you are saving more than just a few articles). My Stock Screens compiles the AII Stock Screens that you are most interested in. My Portfolio allows you to track the stocks you own and/or are interested in. Plus, if you use My Portfolio, My Stock Screens will tell you if any of the stocks held in your portfolio are passing one or more of the AAII Stock Screens. My Preferences allows you to update your email address, postal address, email subscriptions, password and AAII Local Chapter preferences.

Another change is the AAII Sentiment Survey page. We’ve added new charts to help you track the trends as well as a brand-new interactive map showing how sentiment varies across the U.S. If you follow the survey results, I think you’ll find it interesting.

Rest assured that your favorite features and pages are still on the website.

This was not a one-and-done change. We’re continuing to work on additional improvements. For example, new online mutual fund and exchange-traded fund (ETF) guides are forthcoming. They will make researching funds even easier. (And if you’re an A+ Investor or Platinum subscriber, new mutual fund and ETF screeners are on their way too!)

There are further upgrades sitting in our backlog of projects. Many are based on feedback given to us by AAII members and target your evolving needs.

To give your feedback on the home page, or for any questions, simply email members@aaii.com.

In Memory of William O’Neil

Over the weekend, I heard about the death of William O’Neil. He died at age 90 on May 28, 2023.

O’Neil started Investor’s Business Daily (IBD) in 1984. He is perhaps even better known for his CAN SLIM method of investing.

CAN SLIM was introduced to AAII members by O’Neil in the April 1999 AAII Journal. He went on to contribute several more articles to the AAII Journal. CAN SLIM also serves as the underlying basis for one of the strategies used in the Stock Superstars Report (SSR) as well as three of the AAII Stock Screens.

A longer tribute is due, and I will include it in a future AAII Investor Update. Matt Markowski will also be discussing O’Neil in his SSR weekly commentary.

AAII Asset Allocation Survey

Individual investors’ exposure to fixed income pulled back in May, retreating from its 26-month high set in April 2023. The May AAII Asset Allocation Survey also shows slightly higher equity allocations and a small change in cash allocations.

Stock and stock fund allocations increased by 0.9 percentage points to 65.2%. The increase keeps stock and stock fund allocations above their historical average of 61.5% for the 36th consecutive month.

Bond and bond fund allocations decreased by 0.9 percentage points to 14.8%. May was the 27th consecutive month with fixed-income allocations below their historical average of 16.0%.

Cash allocations increased by a modest 0.1 percentage points to 20.0%. Cash allocations are below their historical average of 22.5% for the sixth consecutive month.

Pessimism in the weekly AAII Sentiment Survey pulled back from unusually high levels during the second half of May. Large-cap stocks—particularly large-cap growth—fared well during May. The gains in equity were not widespread, however, as mid-cap, small-cap and value stocks all declined.

May AAII Asset Allocation Survey results:
  • Stocks and Stock Funds: 65.2%, up 0.9 percentage points
  • Bonds and Bond Funds: 14.8%, down 0.9 percentage points
  • Cash: 20.0%, up 0.1 percentage points
May AAII Asset Allocation Details:
  • Stocks: 33.6%, up 3.1 percentage points
  • Stocks Funds: 31.6%, down 2.3 percentage points
  • Bonds: 4.3%, down 0.6 percentage points
  • Bond Funds: 10.6%, down 0.3 percentage points

Historical averages:

  • Bonds/Bond Funds: 16.0%
  • Cash: 22.5%

I am an A+ member. This morning I went to run my usual downloads of the specific securities within particular Guru screens. I could not find a way to export to Excel, not the history of the screen, the securities presently making the cut. This is a real problem for me. Did I miss something on the new website layout? It amazes me how many times data service providers change design and offerings and wind up removing value from their product.

Where do I find "Did you Know" in the new website. This was a Friday article showing tips on what was in or around aaii.com and A+investor And - can you put the link back to "weekly journal"

The new website does not work correctly for me. When I try to open the website using www.aaii.com I get a website page that is not the new website. Before I can log in I am shifted to a page that is trying to sell me the $2 trial for subscribing to the DI. Aside from the fact that I am already a full subscriber to DI, I have not been able to find a way to shut down the page and get to the new website page. I have to exit the entire website and try again. The bottom line is that when I try to open your new website it does not allow me to login and therefore I am completely excluded from using the AAII website. Help!!
