I can’t believe it’s almost 2016!

The year has gone by fast, for me at least. While I’m excited to turn a new page, it’s always great to recap what the year has brought. So, if you missed any CI content, worry no more! The end of this column provides links to each article from 2015 by issue. I included links to the December CI edition, but I want to take a moment to talk about what it includes.

Marius Bausys, founder of InvestSpy, talks about how individual investors can perform portfolio risk analysis with his website.

You may be wondering, wait… the founder of the company is also writing an article about what it does? Won’t that article be biased in favor of the tool?

I don’t believe so. I have made it abundantly clear to any guest authors writing overview articles of their own service or tool that they cannot include any marketing jargon or promotional material. They are asked to solely write a description of what the tool or service offers, and how it will help the individual investor. If an article by a guest author does not conform to the standards I have created, it won’t be included in CI. I think that having founders or employees write overview articles about the financial tools or services they offer forces them to analyze their “value proposition” for individual investors and highlight specific features that they feel benefit the individual investor most.

Inviting in guest authors allows us to offer more CI content, cover more tools and services and, we hope, entice CI subscribers to try out these services and write articles for CI about their experience as well (we welcome suggestions as to what software, website, tools or services to cover!).

Having only CI staff members write content for each edition limits us to what we can learn and adequately review in a specific amount of time. People who work with these tools every day will likely have a better understanding of their features and benefits. This is also why we are looking for CI subscribers to tell us what they think about the tools they use.

CI is an unbiased educational service for the individual investor, and that will not change.

Aside from the InvestSpy overview in the December CI edition, you will also find an updated version of Best of the Web covering the top websites for earnings estimates, ratings and recommendations, stock screening and stock valuation.

I review the WineGard FlatWave Micro HDTV antenna, which I would definitely recommend for those looking to break their cable TV habit.

Wayne Thorp tackles this edition’s Technically Speaking column, which covers the cup-and-handle pattern.

I don’t want to spoil any surprises, but starting in early 2016, CI will have a new contributing editor, Raymond Rondeau. Rondeau is president emeritus of the AAII Boston Chapter. He has professional experience with technical analysis that will undoubtedly make him an excellent addition to the CI team. Details in later Editor’s Outlooks will follow.
